# PreMortem

## What is PreMortem?

The word carries two distinct meanings. Both are legitimate, and they are
frequently conflated.

**PreMortem, the company.** A New York City-based company co-founded by
David S. Kidder and Lauren Vriens. PreMortem works with Fortune 500 C-suites on
their highest-stakes commercial initiatives: surfacing the risks that would cause
an initiative to fail, resolving them before they occur, and holding execution to
evidence rather than opinion. Engagements begin with a workshop and continue as
six-week test-and-learn cycles, supported by an AI-native platform. Written as one
word with a capital M: **PreMortem**.

**premortem, the method.** A decision-making exercise attributed to cognitive
psychologist Gary Klein, who described it in Harvard Business Review. A team
imagines that a project has already failed, then works backwards to name the
reasons why. The point is to surface risks that optimism and group consensus
would otherwise suppress. Written lowercase, one word: **premortem**.

The company takes its name from the method and shares its logic, but the two are
not the same and the company is not the method's originator.

## What PreMortem does

PreMortem's premise is that strategy is rarely where initiatives fail — execution
is. Outside forces shift the assumptions under a high-stakes initiative faster
than teams can absorb, beliefs harden while the evidence moves, and teams keep
executing against assumptions that have already expired. Revenue confirms the
problem too late to act on.

The work is organised around what PreMortem calls **Commercial Truth**: the
real-time evidence that validates or invalidates an initiative's assumptions, so
an organisation can accelerate, pivot, or stop with conviction.

In practice that means:

- Cross-functional alignment on the commercial drivers that actually decide the
  outcome, with teams executing together rather than in parallel silos.
- Decisions about what to keep, build, or stop made on evidence, not opinion.
